Beatrice Arthur stars as Jean Miller, a 50-something widow who reconnects with her high school sweetheart, Sam Morrissey, played by Richard Kiley in the made for TV romantic comedy My First Love. While Jean is a middle class driving instructor living in Queens, Sam has become a very successful doctor in East Hampton, with lots of fancy friends and a vivacious 37 yr. old girlfriend, Claire, played by Joan Van Ark. But Sam realizes that Jean can still work her old charm on him and he finds himself connecting with her in ways that he cannot with Claire. Sam's close friends, Chet and Chris Townsend (played by Richard Herd and Julia Meade) try to welcome Jean into their lives while still feeling for Claire. After several false starts, and lots of reminiscing, Jean and Sam finally hook up and prove that love is sometimes better the second time around. Beatrice  Arthur played a wonderful New Yorker right down to her accent and wardrobe, a credit to the director Gilbert Cates. Many New Yorkers during the late 1980’s would vacation in the Hamptons, particularly East Hampton for the beaches. It wasn’t unusual to see celebrities and doctors out on their motor yachts, enjoying the scenery. A little known fact about Bea Arthur is that she was a U.S. Marine before becoming an actress.

Julia Meade has a wonderful scene with her real life good friend Bea Arthur when they first meet at the country club. Julia (as Chris) asks Jean (Bea), "Do you play...golf?" "Oh," Jean replies, "Just miniature!" They then spend several awkward moments in silence standing stiffly while giving each other the once over out of the corners of their eyes!
